Rugs that are used outdoors are typically made from waterproof materials and coated with special protective coatings that prevent mold growth, dry quickly, and block moisture.
Do outdoor rugs get moldy?
Even though they’re made of mold-resistant synthetic materials, outdoor rugs can still get moldy. The accumulation of dirt and moisture in carpet fibers will promote mold growth. Vacuuming your rug regularly will ensure that any dirt or early mildew you may have will be removed.
Mildew not only looks bad, but it’s also unhealthy. It is best to vacuum on a regular basis in order to remove all the debris that can cause mold growth.
What is the best outdoor rug material?
We highly recommend you choose a carpet made from 100% polypropylene.Â
This material is an all-time favorite among home designers. It is basically plastic, but that shouldn’t scare you, since manufacturers were able to create wonderful designs out of it. Safe to say, outdoor rugs can be as beautiful as indoor rugs.
Can all polypropylene rugs be used outdoors?
Yes, all polypropylene rugs can be used outdoors and are recommended by experts. Polypropylene carpets are often used on patio areas, porches, gazebos, gardens etc.
How to store an outdoor rug for winter
Ideally, you want to keep your rug under a covered area. But even if you don’t, that’s perfectly fine. Just make sure that after a long rainy period, you allow it to dry completely.
For snowy seasons, if possible, store it somewhere indoors or roll it up and cover it with a tarp to keep it dry.
Can a moldy rug be saved?
Luckily, yes, if you have mold or mildew on your rug, most of the time you can easily get rid of it with the right cleaning methods and save it to last you a few more years.
How to clean a moldy rug
First, vacuum it to remove all the dirt and dust, and make sure it’s dry. Then use the following methods:
White Vinegar and Baking Soda
- sprinkle the affected area with baking soda, then spray it with a concentrated vinegar / water solution
- Scrub the areas with a brush
- Leave it for half an hour
- Then rinse it with water
- Finally, hang it somewhere to allow it to dry in direct sunlight.
White Vinegar and Dish Soap
White vinegar and dish soap can both be used to get rid of green mold from carpet.
- Just mix them together and apply the solution to the stains.
- Allow the rug to soak for 30-50 minutes
- Rhen rinse it off and completely dry it.
Bleach
Bleach is also an option that will instantly get rid of any mold you may have (green or white), but this approach is toxic, especially if you have kids or pets.
Bleach is very effective, but will also makes the rug’s color fade away. It’s better to use it on white rugs.
